This is done. I need to take a better photo of it so that I don’t have to awkwardly deal with a weirdly lit background.
But anyway!
I actually painted last night for the first time in months, meaning the last time I worked on this was months ago. I forgot what fish it is, but I’m pretty sure it’s a lantern fish. Or - I just stole the face from a lantern fish and added a nondescript body.
Work in progress - or, start of a series in progress. I wish I could say something deep about my creative process, but the truth is that I just want to put weird faces on everything.
Unfinished - I need to finish the ink wash, hence the silly white lines.
Anyway, a magnapinna! Or big fin squid, or even a long-tentacled squid - I’ve seen both names used. There’s not a whole lot known about this creature, except for it’s estimated length - about 22 feet. Which sounds horrifying until you realize 20 feet of that are just tentacles. There’s also a scale model at the Smithsonian museum of national history (right next to the two giant squids!).
Sorry for all of the plugging, lately.
Selling all of my deep sea illustrations! I’m changing directions with the whole project and am (sadly) parting with the originals.
My whole shop is on sale for the rest of July with the code MIDSUMMER - 15% off of everything!
I put a lot of my sea creature illustrations on various things - GO LOOK! http://www.zazzle.com/taylorbryn
